Delhi Police has committed to adding Sections of the POCSO Act, the SC/ST Act, and charges of attempt to murder to the existing FIR within 72 hours, following a demonstration outside the Parliament Street Police Station on 4 September. The assurance came after a sit-in protest led by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) demanding swift action against a man accused of assaulting the father of a minor student protester.

What Triggered the Protest

The agitation was sparked by a viral video in which a man allegedly boasted of having assaulted the father of a student who had participated in a demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The video drew widespread outrage after the accused reportedly claimed he was released by the Delhi Police owing to his 'political connections' — a claim that protesters and opposition MPs have demanded be investigated.

According to Indian Youth Congress Delhi President Akshay Lakra, the victim sustained injuries requiring seven to eight stitches on his head. The minor's father is reported to have suffered two separate injuries in the assault.

Police Commitment and Key Demands

CJP co-convener Saurav Das told reporters: 'The Additional DCP gave us a commitment that by this evening, charges for attempt to murder will be added to the existing FIR in the victim's case. Along with that, the SC/ST Act will also be invoked, Section 308 will be applied, and Section 351 will also be applied.'

Das further asserted: 'The goons will not be allowed to roam freely like this.'

Opposition MPs Join the Agitation

Azad Samaj Party chief and Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad joined the sit-in, highlighting the threats allegedly being faced by the victim's family. 'The victim's family is scared. Sanjay and his daughter are constantly receiving threats of rape, acid attacks, and murder — they are living in fear. If this is the condition in the country's capital, you can imagine what the situation must be in rural areas,' he said.

Azad confirmed that a separate complaint regarding the rape threats had also been submitted to the police, and warned that if action is not taken within the promised timeframe, protesters would gherao the Police Commissioner's office and, if necessary, the Home Ministry.

Purnia MP Pappu Yadav also addressed the gathering, raising broader concerns about the safety of Dalits, women, and minorities. He questioned the accused's alleged political patronage and called on the government to ensure equal application of law. 'The law is equal for everyone, whether it is me or someone else. But if someone's crime is pardoned based on their power, then that is a threat to democracy and the rule of law,' Azad said, echoing sentiments shared by multiple speakers at the protest.

What Happens Next

With the 72-hour deadline now in effect, the Delhi Police is expected to formally amend the FIR to include the strengthened Sections. Protesters have made clear they will escalate their agitation — including a potential gherao of the Police Commissioner's office — if the commitment is not honoured. The case has drawn attention to broader questions about alleged political interference in police proceedings in the capital.
