Mumbai, Dec 29 (NationPress) The reigning champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), have welcomed former Australian leg-spinner Kristen Beams as their new spin bowling coach for the upcoming 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL) season, as announced by the franchise on Monday.
“This marks my inaugural coaching role here. It’s an extraordinary chance to collaborate with someone of Jhulan Goswami's caliber, a true legend in the sport with whom I have previously competed,” Kristen stated.
“The culture here is remarkable; they’ve cultivated a winning environment over many years while also fostering a familial atmosphere. It’s evident that this group is tightly knit, and that’s exactly the kind of team you want to be a part of,” she mentioned in a video shared on the franchise’s Instagram account.
Kristen has played a pivotal role in Australia’s World Cup endeavors, finishing as the third-highest wicket-taker during the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup in England. Her international experience includes 1 Test, 30 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, alongside 45 T20 matches in the WBBL, after which she transitioned into coaching.
“As a coach stepping in, the ideal situation is to join a close-knit environment with a team that understands how to win,” Kristen added.
She brings a wealth of coaching expertise to the MI setup, which includes head coach Lisa Keightley, bowling coach and mentor Jhulan Goswami, batting coach Devieka Palshikaar, and fielding coach Nicole Bolton.
Kristen has previously coached in the WBBL, notably leading the Hobart Hurricanes to this year's championship, as well as participating in The Hundred. She also served as the head coach of the Australia women's U19 team and held the position of National Development Lead at Cricket Australia and Community Cricket Manager - South at Cricket Tasmania.
The WPL 2026 is scheduled from January 9 to February 5 and will take place in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. MI, who are two-time champions, will be captained by Harmanpreet Kaur and will kick off their campaign against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) led by Smriti Mandhana at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
