Mumbai, April 15 (NationPress) Renowned actor Sanjay Mishra has finally addressed the much-anticipated return of Pakistani star Fawad Khan to Bollywood, deeming it an 'international matter.'
In an open discussion, Mishra expressed his views on the actor’s re-entry. He remarked to IANS, “This is an international issue. If we engage in Hollywood and encounter pushback, what can we do? I grew up appreciating Mehdi Hassan—should I not have? Many enjoyed his work. You cannot satisfy everyone.”
Fawad Khan’s return to Indian cinema with the forthcoming romantic comedy “Abir Gulaal” has reignited debates in both political and entertainment spheres, once again highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding Pakistani artists in Bollywood.
Recently, actress Ameesha Patel defended Khan, emphasizing that India has always embraced talent, regardless of its origin, asserting that art knows no boundaries. Patel stated to IANS, “I admired Fawad Khan even before. We welcome every actor and musician. This is the essence of India. Art is universal; I don’t make distinctions. International artists are welcomed globally—whether they are painters, musicians, actors, or directors.”
Veteran director and current IFTDA President Ashoke Pandit previously expressed strong opposition to Fawad Khan's involvement in the film. He cautioned that the actor's return would elicit a national reaction and criticized the Indian film industry for associating with Pakistani talent, despite an unofficial ban on such collaborations.
Pandit articulated, “It’s a matter of insensitivity towards our national interests. This choice reflects a lack of respect for the gravity of the situation. Some believe they are exempt from these issues, as if they don't impact them. Many contend that art transcends national borders, but I challenge that view. Out of all the attacks on our country, has any Pakistani artist or public figure condemned these actions? Not a single one has publicly denounced the brutal attacks on our soldiers, innocent civilians, or our nation.”
“If you think you are above national sentiment, then it’s crucial that there be repercussions. I guarantee you, the entire nation will respond to this film. I am certain that there will be significant protests, with people taking to the streets to voice their dissent,” Ashoke continued.
The release of the film’s teaser on April 1 prompted immediate backlash, with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) swiftly objecting to its screening in Maharashtra.
Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, “Abir Gulaal” stars Vaani Kapoor alongside Fawad Khan and is set to premiere in theaters on May 9, 2025.
