New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is set to visit Beijing on January 26-27 for a crucial meeting of the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism between India and China, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.
The reinstatement of this bilateral mechanism is a result of the agreement reached at the leadership level, aimed at discussing the forthcoming steps for India-China relations, encompassing political, economic, and people-to-people interactions, as stated by the MEA.
Last month, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited Beijing to meet with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng.
During their discussions, NSA Doval highlighted that the revival of talks between special representatives from both nations regarding the boundary issue—after a five-year hiatus—marks a significant step toward implementing the consensus established by the leaders of both countries, greatly benefiting bilateral relations.
In addition, India and China have agreed to foster “positive directions” for cross-border cooperation and exchanges. This includes the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-boundary rivers, and border trade, as discussed during the 23rd meeting of the Special Representatives (SRs) of India and China, attended by NSA Doval and Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and China's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The two representatives convened based on decisions made during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in October 2024. This meeting was pivotal in determining the future course of discussions to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas and to seek a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary issue.
PM Modi emphasized to President Xi that India-China ties should be founded on three essential principles—mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity—to ensure that they return to a positive trajectory and remain sustainable.
Following this significant meeting, PM Modi remarked, “We welcome the consensus reached on matters that have emerged on the India-China border over the past four years. Ensuring peace and stability at the border must remain our top priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity are the cornerstones of our relationship.”
