PM Modi hails Yediyurappa's 50 years in public life at Chitradurga event
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 9 May lauded former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for his five decades in public life, describing the veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's journey as one defined by "commitment, struggle, sacrifice and dedication to the people." The tribute was delivered at the "Abhimanotsava" event held in Chitradurga, organised to felicitate Yediyurappa on completing 50 years of public service.
How the Message Was Delivered
Unable to attend in person, Prime Minister Modi sent a detailed written message that was read out at the event by Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi. The message, subsequently placed in a photo frame, was formally handed over to Yediyurappa as a memento of the occasion. Joshi noted that Modi held a special affection and deep respect for the former Chief Minister.
What PM Modi Said
In his message, Modi described the occasion as more than a celebration for Karnataka — calling it an opportunity for party workers across India to draw inspiration. "Although I am physically unable to be present at 'Abhimanotsava', my mind is certainly there amongst all those gathered to felicitate a leader who has devoted himself to public service and nation-building," the Prime Minister said.
Modi recalled working closely with Yediyurappa over many years, characterising him as "affectionate, hardworking and humble." He said one constant had run through every phase of Yediyurappa's career: "his absolute commitment to the people of Karnataka and to the ideals of our party."
Yediyurappa's Role in BJP's Karnataka Rise
A significant portion of Modi's message focused on Yediyurappa's foundational role in building the BJP's presence in Karnataka. Modi acknowledged that during the party's early years, Yediyurappa travelled extensively, connected with workers at the booth level and bolstered confidence when the party had limited reach. "At a time when the BJP was unfairly branded as a party of only some regions, Yediyurappa Ji played a defining role in demonstrating that the BJP is a party of every Indian, irrespective of where he or she lives," Modi stated.
Governance Legacy Highlighted
Modi also highlighted Yediyurappa's tenure as Chief Minister, noting his focus on agriculture, irrigation, rural development and farmer welfare. He credited Yediyurappa with being a pioneer in presenting a separate agriculture budget — a move that Modi said left a lasting impact on the state. The Prime Minister further noted Yediyurappa's work to empower marginalised communities through education, skill development, and housing initiatives, while also addressing women's aspirations.
"The people of Karnataka have always admired Yediyurappa Ji for his simplicity and accessibility. Even after occupying the highest office, he never distanced himself from ordinary workers or citizens," Modi said.
A Message for the Next Generation
Concluding his tribute, Modi called Yediyurappa's 50-year political journey an inspiration for young party workers, saying perseverance, discipline and dedication could overcome the toughest obstacles. "Public life is not built overnight, but through years of sacrifice, patience and consistent hard work," he stated. Modi prayed for Yediyurappa's long and healthy life and expressed hope that he would continue to guide generations of party workers and public representatives.
