Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 5 June inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth approximately ₹18,800 crore in Surat, marking one of the largest single-day infrastructure investment drives the city has seen in recent years. The projects span transport, industrial infrastructure, power, healthcare, and urban development, aimed at cementing Surat's standing as a key economic node in Gujarat and western India.

Key Projects Inaugurated

Among the flagship announcements, Prime Minister Modi dedicated key packages of the eight-lane access-controlled Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway to the nation. The expressway is designed to significantly accelerate high-speed connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra and improve logistics efficiency across the western corridor. He also laid the foundation stone for the four-laning of critical sections of National Highway-56, a project intended to improve road access through tribal regions and strengthen the corridor leading to the Statue of Unity.

Healthcare and Industrial Infrastructure

Healthcare in Surat received a notable upgrade with the inauguration of a 200-bed Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital. The facility is equipped to deliver secondary healthcare services — including emergency and trauma care, diagnostic support, and specialised treatment — for workers and their families. On the industrial front, the Prime Minister inaugurated power transmission expansion systems aimed at boosting Gujarat's inter-state electricity evacuation capacity under national grid upgrades. Several initiatives linked to petroleum, chemicals, and petrochemical investment regions were also launched, targeting improved operational efficiency and environmental compliance.

Hazira Review and Strategic Significance

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi reviewed ongoing industrial operations at Hazira in Surat district, a strategic zone that hosts large-scale heavy engineering and defence manufacturing facilities. Hazira has increasingly emerged as a focal point of India's manufacturing ecosystem, particularly in defence production, and has been the site of sustained infrastructure expansion in recent years. The review signals continued Centre-level attention to scaling up the zone's capacity.

Broader Gujarat and Union Territory Tour

The Surat visit forms part of a wider tour that includes development programmes in Daman and infrastructure projects linked to Lakshadweep. Total investment commitments across all regions covered in the tour reportedly exceed ₹20,000 crore, according to official details released by the Prime Minister's Office. This comes amid a sustained push by the Centre to accelerate capital expenditure in western India ahead of the next infrastructure budget cycle.

Expected Impact

The Surat projects are projected to deliver long-term gains in urban mobility, industrial output, power reliability, and healthcare access. Notably, Surat already ranks among India's fastest-growing cities by GDP, and sustained infrastructure investment is expected to deepen its role in the western economic corridor. The expressway packages in particular are seen as a catalyst for reducing logistics costs between two of India's most industrially active states.
