Modi's Madurai Visit: A Turning Point for DMK's Rule in Tamil Nadu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 23 (NationPress) A.N.S. Prasad, spokesperson for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to Madurai will signify a pivotal political shift as the state gears up for the 2026 Assembly elections, indicating what he termed the commencement of the decline of the current Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government.
In a pointed statement, Prasad condemned the DMK government under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for overseeing escalating public debt, worsening law and order, and rampant corruption throughout the state.
He claimed that Tamil Nadu is facing a serious financial crisis and pointed out that numerous welfare commitments made by the DMK during the last Assembly elections remain unfulfilled.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Madurai on March 1, where he will inaugurate the newly built structure at AIIMS Madurai.
Additionally, he will speak at a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) public rally at Mandela Nagar later during his visit, which BJP leaders consider a crucial mobilization strategy prior to the elections.
The BJP, allied with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu, plans to leverage this event to bolster its campaign message and expand its organizational outreach in the region.
Prasad also voiced concerns regarding the management of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, criticizing its administration and specifically mentioning State Minister P.K. Sekar Babu.
Touching on temple governance and kumbabhishekams taking place across Tamil Nadu, he cited irregularities and accused the state government of meddling in religious matters.
He also highlighted issues related to the Karthigai Deepam festival at the Thiruparankundram Temple, alleging mismanagement and administrative failures.
Furthermore, the BJP spokesperson criticized the state-run liquor retailer, Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), claiming that liquor sales have negatively impacted families, especially women, leading to social and economic hardships.
He accused the DMK of trying to garner political support through financial aid programs while neglecting to tackle broader structural governance issues in the state.
Advocating for a “double-engine” government, Prasad stated that leadership from Prime Minister Modi at the national level alongside AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami in Tamil Nadu would facilitate economic development, enhance governance, and reinforce law and order.
As of the time of this report, the DMK had not issued any official response to the allegations.
With political discourse intensifying as the 2026 Assembly elections approach, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Madurai is anticipated to sharpen the political rivalry between the incumbent DMK and the BJP-led NDA in Tamil Nadu.
