Muscat, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Indian Ambassador to Oman, Godavarthi Venkata Srinivas, highlighted the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Oman, emphasizing that defense constitutes the primary pillar of the bilateral relationship between India and Oman, with maritime security being central to this partnership.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, the envoy stated, “Defense is an active engagement of collaboration between the two nations, and it is evident that since 2008, our relationship has been recognized as a strategic partnership. Both nations conduct joint exercises involving their Air Forces, Armies, and Navies in the region, and there are regular interactions between our Coast Guards.”

“Maritime security is a vital aspect of our collaboration. Earlier in 2024, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore further defense cooperation. Overall, I can confidently assert that defense is the strongest foundation of our collaboration,” he added.

The Indian Ambassador noted that the Indian community in Oman, which numbers around 675,000, is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Prime Minister Modi.

“Regarding the agenda, if I may briefly share, it encompasses a wide range of topics, including political matters, defense, security, trade, economic relations, education, culture, and diaspora issues. All these engagements are planned for the visit of the Honorable Prime Minister,” he remarked.

Ambassador Srinivas pointed out numerous synergistic areas where both countries can further collaborate, particularly in sustainable development.

Investment is another significant area of cooperation, with Indians contributing across various sectors such as steel production, green hydrogen, and port management, all aiding in Oman’s growth.

“Historically, India and Oman have been connected through maritime trade, coin exchanges, seals, and ivory trade for over 5,000 years. Our presence here spans 250 years, with Indians making substantial contributions to Oman’s development,” stated the Indian Ambassador.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Oman, at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, marks the concluding leg of a three-nation tour that also included Jordan and Ethiopia.
