MP CM Mohan Yadav links Gandhi's swadeshi vision to India's self-reliance push
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on 2 October 2026 drew a direct line between Mahatma Gandhi's swadeshi philosophy and India's present-day economic nationalism, asserting that the country is advancing on the principles of 'Make in India', 'Made in India', and 'Swadeshi'. Yadav made the remarks in Bhopal while offering floral tributes to Gandhi on his birth anniversary.
Key Remarks by the Chief Minister
Yadav said Gandhi's vision of self-reliance remained deeply relevant to contemporary India, citing the construction of the new Parliament building as a tangible expression of the country's commitment to its indigenous identity and languages. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for elevating the stature of Indian democracy on the global stage.
'It is our good fortune that today, after Independence, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, democracy is standing tall before the world,' Yadav said.
Tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri
The Chief Minister also paid homage to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Lal Bahadur Shastri at his statue in Bhopal, recalling Shastri's legacy of simplicity, duty, and resolve. 'Shastri Ji's life — exemplifying service to the nation through simplicity, dedication to duty, and unwavering willpower — will forever remain a source of inspiration for us all,' Yadav said.
Political Dig at Congress
Yadav also used the occasion to criticise previous Indian National Congress governments, alleging that many reforms necessary after Independence were delayed for decades and that symbols associated with British colonial rule continued to receive undue prominence. He contended that India is now moving forward on the strength of its own indigenous capabilities.
Congress Leaders Observe the Anniversaries
State Congress leaders independently marked the birth anniversaries of Gandhi and Shastri in Bhopal, with Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari invoking Gandhi's message of truth and non-violence alongside Shastri's iconic 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' call. 'Mahatma Gandhi's path of truth, non-violence and harmony, and Shastri Ji's mantra of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' will continue to guide the nation,' Patwari said. Former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and several senior Congress leaders were present at the party's programme.
Both events underscored the enduring political resonance of Gandhi and Shastri's legacies, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition staking competing claims to their vision for modern India.
