Mumbai, Jan 17 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has given the green light to the "Mumbai Police Housing Township Project". This initiative is set to construct approximately 40,000 to 45,000 government quarters for police personnel across Mumbai and its suburbs.
The project will be carried out by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) under the supervision of the Public Works Department.
Encompassing nearly 50 million square feet of land, the project is projected to cost around Rs 20,000 crore.
The government will contribute 30 percent of the total funds, while the remaining 70 percent will be sourced by the MSIDC through loans from various financial institutions, backed by government guarantees.
An initial funding of Rs 100 crore has also been approved for the corporation to prepare the technical and economic feasibility report and kick-start the project.
“With Mumbai's rising population and the need for enhanced security, there is an urgent requirement for modern and well-equipped housing for police officers. This development will enable the police force to operate with increased efficiency,” stated an official from the Home Department.
The Mumbai Police currently has a workforce of 51,308. Presently, the available housing options are outdated and located in buildings from the British era. Out of 22,904 service residences, around 3,777 are deemed uninhabitable.
Moreover, between 400 to 500 personnel apply for housing each month. Due to the shortage of accommodations, many police officers have to travel long distances to their workplaces each day.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved a direct funding mechanism for 1,000 e-bus facilities under the PM-E-Drive scheme for Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal.
Under the Payment Security Mechanism, the respective companies will receive funds via a Direct Debit Mandate from the accounts of both Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
Furthermore, the Cabinet sanctioned the construction of a multi-purpose hub and terminal market for farmers in Bapgaon (Tal. Bhiwandi) in the Thane district, aimed at enhancing vegetable exports.
For this purpose, approximately 7.96 hectares of land will be allocated to the State Agricultural Marketing Corporation.
Facilities for vapour heat treatment, plant irradiation, a pack house, and storage for fruits and vegetables will also be established.
