Assam NDA govt likely to be sworn in on May 12 for third term
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Assam is likely to be sworn in for a third consecutive term on May 12, following the alliance's decisive victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, sources said on Wednesday, 6 May. Incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to return to power, completing a smooth transition from caretaker to elected government.
Key Dates and NDA Legislature Party Meeting
According to sources, the NDA Legislature Party meeting is scheduled for 10 am on May 10 in Guwahati, where alliance legislators are expected to formally elect their leader. All winning NDA candidates have been asked to arrive in Guwahati by May 9 ahead of the crucial meeting and the subsequent government formation process.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including former party national president J.P. Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, are also reportedly expected to reach Assam on May 9 to participate in discussions and related events.
NDA to Stake Claim Before Governor on May 10
Following the Legislature Party meeting, the NDA is likely to stake claim to form the new government before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on the evening of May 10, sources added. The formal swearing-in ceremony is, however, expected to take place on May 12, after completion of all constitutional and organisational formalities.
Earlier on Wednesday, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that the formation and swearing-in of the new government would take place after May 11, once all procedural requirements were fulfilled.
Sarma Submits Resignation, Assembly Dissolved
Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Sarma said the Election Commission had formally notified the Assembly poll results, following which he tendered the resignation of his Council of Ministers in line with democratic traditions.
