The decision followed an important meeting of NDA leaders convened in New Delhi on Thursday.
The resolution granting authority to PM Modi and Nadda was endorsed during this meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who attended the session, informed the media afterwards that the final candidate selected by the Prime Minister and the BJP President would garner the consensus and backing of all NDA allies.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, Lok Janshakti Party’s Chirag Paswan, TDP’s Lavu Krishna Devarayalu, and Republican Party of India’s Ramdas Athawale were also present at the meeting. Notably, Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had previously expressed unconditional support for the BJP’s candidate on Wednesday.
The official announcement regarding the NDA's Vice Presidential candidate is anticipated on Tuesday, ahead of the August 21 deadline for nomination submissions.
This election for Vice President follows the mid-term resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who left the position citing health issues. His departure has led to considerable speculation about potential tensions between him and the government.
The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9.
The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college made up of members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Given their clear numerical strength in Parliament, the NDA is well-positioned to secure victory for its chosen candidate.
Additionally, the Vice President of India also takes on the role of ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making this position politically significant.
