NHRC Demands Action on Controversial Lyrics of 'Sarke Chunar' from 'KD: The Devil'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent notices to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Union Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting, as well as Google India, regarding claims that the newly launched song "Sarke Chunar" from the anticipated movie "KD: The Devil" features objectionable and sexually suggestive lyrics that are accessible to children.
A bench led by NHRC Member Priyank Kanoongo acknowledged a complaint asserting that the song contains vulgar and double-meaning lyrics that are deemed inappropriate for public exposure, particularly for young audiences.
The complaint indicates that the song is widely disseminated via television, social media, and digital platforms, posing a potential risk to the mental health and moral development of minors.
Furthermore, it alleges that the increasing prevalence of explicit lyrical content in mainstream entertainment fosters the normalization of such inappropriate expressions among youth.
The complainant has urged the NHRC to examine the situation, procure a report from the relevant certification authorities, and establish necessary guidelines or advisories to regulate such content and protect children’s rights.
Noting that the allegations, if substantiated, suggest possible infringements of human rights concerning the safeguarding of minors, the NHRC issued the notice under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
The NHRC has mandated the Chairman of the CBFC, the Secretaries of the Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting, and the Indian lead for core government affairs and public policy at Google to investigate the claims and deliver an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks for its review. Amidst the escalating controversy, the producers of the track have removed "Sarke Chunar" from YouTube.
Sources have informed IANS that the producers are in the process of creating a revised version of the song with updated lyrics, although the release timeline remains uncertain.
The track features Sanjay Dutt and Nora Fatehi and has drawn widespread backlash for its suggestive choreography and lyrics shortly after its debut.
The song is performed by Mangli, with lyrics penned by Raqeeb Alam and music composed, arranged, and produced by Arjun Janya.
Additionally, Advocate and social activist Vineet Jindal has lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police cyber cell, calling for legal measures against the creators, asserting that the song contains inappropriate lyrics unsuitable for public platforms.
This controversy has elicited reactions from various public figures. Singer Armaan Malik labeled the track as a “new low” in songwriting, while former cricketer Harbhajan Singh criticized both the song and the involvement of the actors.
Actress and politician Kangana Ranaut also expressed her strong disapproval of the situation, claiming that the Hindi film industry has “crossed all limits to achieve cheap PR tactics and attention-seeking.”
Addressing reporters outside Parliament, she remarked that watching television with family has become increasingly challenging and advocated for stricter regulations on such content in cinema.
Directed by Prem, "KD: The Devil" is produced by KVN Productions and stars Dhruva Sarja in the leading role, alongside Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty, V Ravichandran, Ramesh Aravind, Reeshma Nanaiah, and Nora Fatehi in significant roles.
The film is set to be released in multiple languages, including Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
