I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw: Freedom of Speech Has Limits Amid ‘Sarka Chunar’ Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) - The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has addressed the public backlash regarding the song ‘Sarka Chunar’, which has been deemed overtly vulgar. On Tuesday, he urged filmmakers to refrain from ‘misusing’ their freedom of speech and recommended that it be exercised in accordance with societal norms.
In the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw asserted, “The song has already faced a prohibition. It is imperative for us to respect and adhere to the reasonable limitations that accompany the Freedom of Speech. This freedom is not unconditional; it must align with the context of our society and culture.”
Vaishnaw's comments came in response to inquiries from SP MP Anand Bhadouria about the Bollywood film song 'Sarke Chunariya'.
He further emphasized that the government is dedicated to implementing sensible and stringent actions to safeguard the minds of the young, who are particularly susceptible to the negative impacts of digital content.
Importantly, the controversial track “Sarke Chunar,” featuring Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt from the film ‘KD: The Devil’, has sparked considerable outrage over its suggestive lyrics and dance moves since it debuted.
Following severe public criticism and multiple complaints filed against the song, it was banned on Tuesday. Additionally, it was taken down from the YouTube platform.
On the same day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the producers concerning the ‘offensive lyrics and indecent gestures’ found in the song.
“Who can comfortably watch this with their family? While we may not expect morality from Bollywood, it is disgraceful for the censor board to approve such obscenity. This mentally disturbed individual is corrupting generations with their psychopathic behavior. We will not permit this filth to propagate in our society. We are issuing notices for necessary action,” NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo stated, expressing his outrage over the track.
A formal complaint has also been lodged with the CBFC and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, calling for legal measures against the “extremely vulgar, sexually suggestive, and obscene” song.
