Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) Former Trinamool Congress councillor Nirmal Dutta was apprehended in Bidhannagar on Wednesday, facing allegations of intimidating and attempting to influence voters.
On Tuesday, BJP candidate Sharadwat Mukherjee lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding these allegations.
The BJP candidate also approached the Commissioner of Police in Bidhannagar to file a formal complaint against Dutta, which led to the former Trinamool Congress leader's arrest. Notably, Nirmal Dutta’s spouse holds the position of a Trinamool Congress councillor for Ward No. 38 in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
During a meeting, Nirmal Dutta was overheard stating, “We will identify the residents of the Dattabad area and determine their voting preferences; we possess Aadhaar and voter IDs.” This comment prompted the BJP to take action.
The uproar reportedly began following Dutta’s statements at a gathering in Salt Lake on April 13.
Threats were alleged against attendees during this public meeting. As a result, BJP candidate Sharadwat Mukherjee submitted a written complaint to the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner, citing intimidation and attempts to influence voters. He also reported Nirmal Dutta to the Election Commission.
Acting on the complaint, the Trinamool Congress leader was arrested within a day and subsequently presented before a Bidhannagar court on Wednesday.
The court issued a directive for 10 days of judicial custody. It is noteworthy that Nirmal Dutta had previously been accused of assaulting BJP workers in the Dattabad locality of Salt Lake.
Earlier that day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remarked that if one Trinamool Congress leader faces arrest, a hundred others would step up.
Speaking at an election rally in Islampur, North Dinajpur district, Banerjee criticized the Election Commission for targeting Trinamool Congress leaders ahead of the Assembly elections.
Polling is scheduled in 294 Assembly constituencies across West Bengal in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with Bidhannagar and Kolkata participating in the second phase.
Vote counting will occur on May 4.
