New Delhi, June 21 (NationPress) The BJP and JD-U praised the decision by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to increase pensions, labeling it as 'good news'.
Recently, Nitish Kumar declared a substantial increase in the monthly social security pension for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and widowed women, raising it from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100.
The enhanced pension will be effective from July, with beneficiaries receiving the funds directly in their bank accounts on the 10th of each month.
“Under the guidance of PM Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Bihar is steadfastly progressing towards development. From infrastructure to education, every sector is advancing rapidly. This pension increase for vulnerable groups is a positive initiative. It’s certainly good news for our state. Both PM Modi and Nitish Kumar are dedicated to the welfare of the populace,” stated BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh during an IANS interview.
JD-U leader Ashok Choudhary echoed these sentiments, expressing that the long-awaited demand for a pension increase has finally been addressed.
“During the Lok Sabha elections, it was a common view that Rs 400 was insufficient, especially considering current inflation rates. The elderly, widows, and persons with disabilities urgently needed support. Raising the pension to Rs 1,100 is a significant step towards providing dignity to marginalized groups. This initiative by Nitish Kumar deserves commendation,” he remarked.
Choudhary also mentioned that this measure will empower vulnerable members of society, including the elderly who often feel powerless.
“When an elderly person can share treats with grandchildren or manage small expenses, it brings back a sense of self-worth and happiness,” he added.
JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar commended the initiative and emphasized the inclusive philosophy behind it.
“Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, through his model of 'development with justice', has ensured that social welfare programs like this are based on eligibility, rather than religion or caste. This pension increase is part of that inclusive vision. It will benefit millions and secure the blessings of the elderly as well as the support of those with disabilities,” he noted.
Neeraj Kumar also took the opportunity to challenge the opposition.
Addressing Bihar's Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, Kumar said, “You always talk about the needy, but now it’s your moment. If you disagree with your father’s beliefs, initiate the 'Tejashwi Pension Scheme'. Sell part of your assets and assist the less fortunate. Don’t just criticize; take action.”
This initiative arrives ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections and is perceived as both a welfare measure and a politically strategic move. Through this announcement, the NDA government aims to solidify its reputation as a pro-poor regime focused on real benefits.
