Patna, July 22 (NationPress) In the wake of Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation as Vice President of India due to health issues, Bihar BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul has proposed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar be appointed as the new Vice President.
While addressing the media outside the Bihar Assembly, Haribhushan Thakur stated, “It would be advantageous if Nitish Kumar steps into the role of Vice President of India.”
This declaration has sparked significant reactions within Bihar’s political landscape, with many perceiving it as a strategic move by the BJP to gain momentum ahead of the Bihar Assembly Election 2025.
The announcement has prompted a strong counter-response from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Senior RJD member Bhai Birendra questioned Nitish Kumar’s qualifications, asserting, “If Nitish Kumar struggles to manage Bihar, how can he excel as Vice President? He is no longer suitable for such a position,” stated Bhai Birendra.
He went on to remark, “Not everyone within the BJP would support his Vice Presidency. As the opposition, we aim to establish our government.”
Addressing the ongoing turmoil in the Bihar Assembly, Bhai Birendra, who has been an MLA for four terms from the Maner Assembly Constituency, indicated that the opposition had submitted a motion to debate the special voter list revision and escalating crime rates in Bihar, urging that all other proceedings be halted to focus on these critical matters.
“The government is unwilling to heed the opposition and is attempting to stifle democratic expression,” he lamented.
According to the Constitution, the Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
With Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, the Rajya Sabha chair is now vacant. Currently, Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who has been in this position since 2020, is overseeing the Rajya Sabha sessions.
