Did Nitish Kumar's Actions Towards a Woman's Hijab Spark Outrage?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Opposition factions have heavily criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following the circulation of a video showing him allegedly removing a woman's hijab during a public ceremony, labeling the act as shameful and calling for an apology.
In contrast, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav defended Kumar, asserting that the Chief Minister's actions were indicative of 'fatherly emotion' rather than an intention to offend.
The incident gained traction after a video surfaced on social media depicting the 74-year-old leader, who is also the chief of the Janata Dal-United, presenting a certificate to a woman AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) doctor at an official event on Monday. In the footage, Kumar appears to signal the woman to remove her hijab. Before she could react, he was seen reaching out and pulling down the hijab, momentarily revealing her mouth and chin.
Shiv Sena-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the behavior, stating, 'What he did is extremely shameful, and they should apologize for it. No woman, regardless of her attire, should be publicly humiliated in this manner. Pulling down her burqa like that is completely wrong.'
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat echoed similar sentiments, connecting the incident to greater issues concerning women’s dignity and safety. 'We keep talking about 'Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao' and women's safety. If a prominent leader like Nitish Kumar is seen doing such an act, it is highly shameful and condemnable.'
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC Qari Sohaib expressed his feelings of 'embarrassment' over the incident, stating, 'Watching those videos was extremely embarrassing for me, and any Bihari should feel ashamed.'
In a contrasting viewpoint, Independent MP Pappu Yadav defended the Chief Minister, suggesting that the actions should be interpreted differently. According to Yadav, Kumar's behavior resembled that of a father addressing his daughter, reflecting an emotional bond.
Clarifying his stance, Pappu Yadav remarked, 'No, the hijab was not removed. He spoke like a father to his daughter. His attitude was reflective of a fatherly relationship.'
