Agartala, March 1 (NationPress) The first Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) production facility in Northeast India is set to be established in Tripura, as announced by Chief Minister Manik Saha during the foundation stone laying ceremony at Purba Laxmibill in Sepahijala District.

The Chief Minister indicated that the ALIMCO, operating under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to launch its inaugural Auxiliary Production Centre at Purba Laxmibill, which will significantly improve accessibility and service delivery for Divyangjan (people with disabilities). He stated that this new facility heralds a transformative phase in the manufacturing and provision of assistive devices in the northeastern region, aligning with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

An official noted that the establishment of the ALIMCO Auxiliary Production Centre is a pivotal effort to enhance accessibility and service delivery for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and Senior Citizens in the region. This landmark initiative involves an investment of Rs 45 crore and signifies the dawn of a new chapter in assistive device manufacturing and service delivery in the northeast, as highlighted by the official.

He further explained that the centre would fulfill the need for a specialized production and distribution facility to effectively serve the local population while also creating job opportunities.

During the foundation stone event, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B.L Verma remarked that under Prime Minister Modi's guidance, the ministry has been dedicated to empowering Divyangjan. The Union Minister reported that in the past decade, 19 lakh physical assistance devices have been distributed to 15 lakh Divyangjan and four lakh senior citizens.

Verma also shared that 92,000 physical assistance devices valued at Rs 13.5 crore were distributed during the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The planned auxiliary production centre in Tripura will be the eighth of its kind across the nation and the first in the entire northeastern region, he added, urging efforts to promote self-reliance among Divyangjan and senior citizens to ensure their inclusion in the mainstream.

Chief Minister Saha stated that in 2017, there were four thousand Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the state, which has now expanded to 56,000, involving 4.5 lakh women. He further mentioned that the government is implementing measures to enhance the economic status and self-reliance of women.
