Patna, March 21 (NationPress) A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) residing in the US, who had traveled to Bihar's Vaishali district to partake in Holi festivities, was shot dead during a chain-snatching event on Friday, according to police reports.
The incident took place near the Ufraul power substation, within the jurisdiction of the Rajapakad police station, around 9 a.m.
The attack unfolded in the presence of his mother and daughter.
The victim, Rahul Anand, was on his way home with his family when two assailants on a motorcycle approached him under the guise of seeking directions. They proceeded to snatch his gold chain, which led to a struggle.
In the course of the altercation, the passenger on the bike shot him in the chest. The perpetrators fled the scene post-attack.
Rahul Anand suffered critical injuries, and with help from local residents, his family rushed him to a nearby medical facility, but he was subsequently referred to Patna for more comprehensive treatment.
He was admitted to Paras Hospital on Bailey Road in Patna, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, the Rajapakad police have initiated an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
Veena Kumari, the SHO of Rajapakad police station, remarked: "We are thoroughly investigating the case and striving to identify the suspects. The victim was fatally shot during the chain snatching at the Ufraul power substation on Friday."
“An FIR has been lodged under the pertinent sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sahita, and the investigation is ongoing,” she added.
The deceased, Rahul Anand, had completed his studies in hotel management and was employed in the US. He was the son of Ramashankar Chaudhary, a resident of Deeh Bucholi village, located under the Mahisaur police station in the district.
This incident has reignited concerns regarding the safety of individuals, particularly those visiting from abroad, who may be unfamiliar with the realities on the ground in Bihar.
In recent years, Bihar has seen an uptick in incidents of snatching and street crimes.
