Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 11 (NationPress) Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, has voiced significant concern regarding the ‘unfortunate’ and ‘disrespectful’ treatment of President Droupadi Murmu during her recent trip to West Bengal.
In a letter directed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Majhi labeled the incident as “disturbing” and “inconsistent with constitutional values.” He remarked that India’s democratic framework is founded on mutual respect and dignity, emphasizing that differences of opinion should never translate into differences of heart.
“The treatment of the Hon'ble President, a respected tribal woman, during her visit to West Bengal has caused profound distress across the nation,” stated Majhi.
The Chief Minister pointed out the lack of basic courtesies extended to the President during her visit, especially at an event with members of the tribal community, which has resulted in “deep pain” for many throughout the country.
He highlighted that the incident, occurring just prior to International Women’s Day, has been hurtful to Adivasis, backward classes, and Dalits across the nation.
Majhi, representing the Santhal community, expressed: “This event has not only offended the sentiments of millions of Adivasis, backward classes, and Dalits across the country, but has also cast an avoidable shadow over the reputation of West Bengal, a region renowned for its culture, civility, and respect for democratic institutions.”
He underscored that the Santhal community is extensive, covering many regions of India, and plays a crucial role in the nation’s development.
CM Majhi conveyed that, as a member of the Santhal community, he is profoundly troubled by this occurrence.
He urged Banerjee to contemplate the situation, appealing for a gesture of regret towards the President and the Indian populace. Such an acknowledgment, he stated, would help reaffirm the shared commitment to democratic principles and the dignity of constitutional roles.
“I earnestly implore you to reflect on this matter and express your regret to the Hon'ble President and to the citizens of the country. Such a gesture would reinforce our shared commitment to democratic values and the esteem of constitutional offices,” Majhi urged.
It is noteworthy that President Murmu attended the International Santal Conference in Siliguri, West Bengal, on March 7, but her visit ignited political tension due to alleged breaches of protocol and her comments regarding its management.
