Anbumani Ramadoss Condemns Mamata Banerjee’s Protocol Breach During Presidential Visit
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 8 (NationPress) PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss has vehemently criticized the West Bengal administration, asserting that President Droupadi Murmu was "intentionally disrespected" during her recent visit to the state for an event aimed at the Santali tribal community.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Anbumani accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government of neglecting proper protocol during the President's visit.
He expressed that the preparations for the occasion and the reception granted to the President were troubling, raising questions about how the country's first citizen was treated.
This issue arose from the President’s involvement in the International Santali Tribal People’s Conference held near Bagdogra in northern West Bengal.
Reports indicated that the event's venue was abruptly changed from Bidhannagar to Koshaypur, close to the Bagdogra airport, leading to a significantly reduced attendance, especially from the Santali community members who had planned to be there.
Ramadoss contended that the venue switch and low turnout stemmed from political interference by the ruling Trinamool Congress party.
He emphasized that the arrangements seemed to have been made in a manner that diminished the significance of the President's visit.
Additionally, he criticized that neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any senior minister from her cabinet was present to welcome the President at the Bagdogra airport. Instead, the welcome was only extended by the Mayor of Siliguri on behalf of the state government.
According to established protocol, it is customary for the Chief Minister to personally receive the President when visiting a state. If the Chief Minister is unavailable, a senior minister is typically assigned to handle the ceremonial welcome.
Describing this alleged protocol failure as "deeply regrettable," he highlighted its significance, noting that President Murmu is the first woman from a tribal background to occupy the presidency in India's history.
“To insult the President is to disrespect the entire nation. This incident also reflects a disregard for women and tribal communities,” he stated, calling for an apology from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to both the President and the Santali community.
In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has addressed the allegations, providing her account of the events surrounding the President’s visit.
