MHA Requests Accountability from West Bengal Over Protocol Breaches During President Murmu's Visit
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 8 (NationPress) – The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has requested a detailed report from the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, regarding the protocol breaches that occurred during President Droupadi Murmu's recent visit to the state.
President Murmu served as the Chief Guest and principal speaker at the International Santal Conclave in Gossaipur, Darjeeling, on Saturday.
According to sources from the state secretariat, Nabanna, the MHA's primary inquiry concerns the reasons behind the state administration’s refusal to allow the event to take place at its originally planned venue, as well as the last-minute change of location.
The MHA's communication has been directed to Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty’s office, with a request for a response by Sunday evening, as reported by state secretariat sources.
It remains to be seen when and how the state government will respond to this query.
Sources indicated that Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan sent a directive to the Chief Secretary on Sunday, seeking information on the disruptions that occurred during the President's event and what actions the state administration took to manage the situation.
Initially, the President was expected to arrive in North Bengal on Friday afternoon, but her visit was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
On Saturday morning, she arrived at Bagdogra airport at 11:30 am and was scheduled to attend a tribal community function in Phansidewa, near Siliguri, which was later moved to Gossaipur.
The venue change led to the President expressing her displeasure. Subsequently, she visited Phansidewa, the originally planned site, where she made mild criticisms of the state administration, while affectionately referring to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as her younger sister.
During her visit, the President highlighted that neither the Chief Minister nor any other Cabinet members were present to greet her, which deviated from the customary protocols during presidential visits.
Following her remarks, a verbal exchange ensued between BJP leaders and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah criticizing the Mamata government for the incident.
In response, the Chief Minister defended her administration, asserting that no protocols were violated during the President’s visit and accused the BJP of misusing the President's office for political ends.
