Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 13 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, met with R.N. Ravi, the newly appointed 22nd Governor, on Friday. Adhikari urged him to initiate action against Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and acting Director General of Police Peeyush Pandey regarding the alleged breach of protocol during President Droupadi Murmu's recent visit to the state.
“I have called upon the Governor to take necessary measures to uphold the constitutional and democratic frameworks in West Bengal. Additionally, I requested his intervention regarding the Chief Secretary and acting DGP in light of the protocol violations during the President's visit, which amounted to an affront to her dignity,” Adhikari stated to reporters after his meeting with the Governor at Lok Bhavan.
As per Adhikari, the entire state felt embarrassed due to the incidents surrounding the President’s visit. “The state administration failed to adhere to and respect the established protocols during the President’s visit to West Bengal. The pillars of democracy are faltering in our state. I briefed the Governor on the current situation,” he further emphasized.
Notably, Adhikari missed attending Ravi's oath-taking ceremony at Lok Bhavan on Thursday morning as he was in New Delhi at that time.
“Upon returning to Kolkata this morning, my priority was to meet the new Governor,” he shared.
“I also expressed my commitment to fully support and collaborate with the Governor in my capacity as the Leader of the Opposition for the state's overall progress, law and order maintenance, and all initiatives aimed at public welfare. I presented him with a copy of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and wished him a fruitful tenure,” Adhikari added.
Ravi replaces C.V. Ananda Bose, who abruptly resigned from the post on the evening of March 5, with Ravi's appointment announced later that same evening. Ravi arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday, while Bose departed for his hometown in Kerala.
Ravi is the second former Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer to take the oath as the Governor of West Bengal in the past fifteen years.
Prior to the pivotal West Bengal Assembly elections in 2011, which saw the conclusion of the 34-year Left Front rule and the onset of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, former IB chief and National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan was sworn in as the Governor of the state.
