Odisha Vigilance nabs Capital Hospital doctor for ₹30,000 bribe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Odisha Vigilance on Monday, 17 August 2026, arrested Dr Satyajit Behera, an Assistant Surgeon posted at Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, while he was allegedly in the act of accepting a bribe of ₹30,000. The money was demanded in exchange for signing work certificates needed to release the salaries of employees of an NGO engaged by the hospital.
How the Trap Was Laid
The NGO in question had been deployed by Capital Hospital to assist unknown and destitute patients arriving at the casualty department. According to Odisha Vigilance, the NGO's functionary had reportedly been approaching Dr Behera since June 2026, seeking his signature on work certificates for employees whose salaries for June and July 2026 remained pending.
Dr Behera allegedly refused to sign unless paid ₹30,000. Faced with the demand, the NGO functionary reported the matter to Vigilance authorities, who set up a sting operation. Dr Behera was apprehended on the spot while allegedly accepting the bribe amount.
What Vigilance Officials Said
'Facing such bribe demand and harassment, the complainant reported the matter to vigilance authorities. On this, today, a team of Odisha Vigilance nabbed Dr Behera while taking a bribe of ₹30,000 from the complainant. The tainted bribe money of ₹30,000 has been recovered and seized from the possession of accused Dr Behera,' the Vigilance Department stated.
Searches and Case Registration
Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to Dr Behera to assess whether he possesses disproportionate assets. Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station has registered Case No. 19/26 on 16 August under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. An investigation is underway to establish further details of the case.
Broader Anti-Corruption Drive in Odisha
This arrest comes amid a wider crackdown on corruption in Odisha's public health sector. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently dismissed another doctor, Dr Patitapaban Barik, who was posted at Gurandi Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gajapati district, after he was found guilty in a corruption case registered during his tenure as Medical Officer at Gurundia CHC in Sundargada district.
Chief Minister Majhi has directed officials at all levels to maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, repeatedly stating that no corrupt official will be spared. The arrest of Dr Behera is the latest signal that the state administration intends to enforce that directive within public hospitals.
