Bhubaneswar, March 20 (NationPress) The state of Odisha boasts a total of 161,338 electric vehicles (EVs) currently in operation, according to Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, who made this statement on Thursday.

In response to a query from MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo in the state assembly, the transport minister noted that electric vehicles account for 1.35 percent of the overall vehicle count in the state.

He emphasized that the rate of EV registration in Odisha aligns with the national average. Based on the data he presented in the assembly, a total of 5,626 electric vehicles were registered in 2021.

The registration of EVs surged by 405.63 percent in 2022.

In that year, 28,447 new EVs were registered in Odisha, while the statistics for the subsequent years show registrations of 44,545 in 2023 and 65,977 in 2024.

Furthermore, 10,423 EVs have been registered so far in 2025.

The Minister also disclosed that the highest number of EVs were registered in Khordha district, whereas Phulbani recorded the fewest EV registrations in Odisha from 2021 to March 12, 2025.

A total of 45,195 EVs have been registered in Khurdha district during this timeframe.

The registrations in other districts include 19,986 in Cuttack, 10,174 in Balasore, 11,287 in Puri, and 10,290 in Sundargarh.

Earlier, the transport minister had mentioned that the state government has allocated Rs 232.45 crore in subsidies to EV buyers from 2021 until March 5, 2025, under the Odisha Electric Vehicle Policy 2021.

The Odisha government offers subsidies for electric vehicles, with varying amounts depending on the type (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers).

Additionally, state government employees can benefit from interest-free loans for purchasing electric vehicles. The Odisha government also provides exemptions on road tax and registration fees for e-buses.
