Kiren Rijiju Highlights Opposition's Reluctance to Support Motion Against Speaker Om Birla
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) In a response to the no-confidence motion aimed at Lok Speaker Om Birla, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized that the Speaker possesses significant ‘goodwill and backing’ from various political factions. Rijiju noted that numerous Opposition members are skeptical of the motion but feel obligated to support it due to ‘political pressures’.
“Approximately 50 Opposition MPs have approached me, expressing their opposition to this motion; however, they are compelled to endorse it due to their political circumstances,” Rijiju informed the assembly.
He also criticized the Opposition for initiating the motion to oust Om Birla, while highlighting the remarkable progress made during his tenure—acknowledging his role in reducing paperwork and transitioning the House into a digital era.
“Unprecedented advancements have occurred under Om Birla’s leadership, enabling new members to voice their opinions more than ever, and the most urgent public issues have been addressed with greater frequency,” he stated.
Rijiju credited Om Birla for the digital transformation of Parliament, asserting that lawmakers will always appreciate his efforts to enhance the legislative legacy.
He condemned the Congress-led Opposition for their duplicity, noting that the productivity of the House has improved, with more opportunities given to Opposition members for supplementary questions. Instead of expressing gratitude, they have conspired to remove the Speaker.
Expressing his admiration for Om Birla’s management of the House, the Parliamentary Affairs minister shared that he and many other ruling party members take pride in serving Parliament during this transformative period.
Rijiju accused the Opposition of harboring animosity towards the Speaker and claimed their motion against him is part of a malicious strategy to undermine constitutional institutions.
