Chandigarh, April 11 (NationPress) Papalpreet Singh, a key associate of Khalistan supporter and Lok Sabha MP from Khadoor Sahib, Amritpal Singh, was taken into custody by the Punjab Police after concluding his two-year detention under the National Security Act (NSA). He was presented in a court in Ajnala, which ordered him to undergo a four-day police remand on Friday.
Upon the conclusion of his detention, Papalpreet Singh, who was apprehended in a police operation in Hoshiarpur on April 10, 2023, was returned to Punjab from Dibrugarh Jail in Assam. He faces charges alongside others, including Amritpal Singh, for assaulting a police station in Ajnala in February 2023, seeking the release of one of their close associates, Lovepreet Toofan.
However, his family contends that no damage was inflicted upon the police station, asserting that he merely aimed to combat drug abuse in Punjab. “It is evident to everyone. He sought to protect individuals from drugs and urged them to embrace their Gurus’ teachings,” stated Papalpreet’s mother, Mandhir Kaur, while calling for his release.
Papalpreet’s uncle, Amarjeet Singh, questioned the number of individuals charged under the NSA during the 1984 riots or the Vadodara riots in Gujarat. “Papalpreet is a journalist,” he emphasized.
Papalpreet Singh was found hiding in a dera in a village in Hoshiarpur, from where he was arrested in a coordinated operation involving the Punjab Police and the special cell of the Delhi Police. He and others have been charged with several offenses related to inciting disharmony, attempted murder, assault on police personnel, and hindering the lawful duties of public servants.
Khalistan sympathizer Amritpal Singh, along with nine aides, was detained and kept in Dibrugarh Jail. After remaining there since 2023, nine, excluding the Member of Parliament, have been released. Papalpreet has been a longstanding advocate for the Khalistan movement, which seeks an independent homeland for Sikhs.
