New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) Seven associates of MP Amritpal Singh, who were incarcerated in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), have been transferred to Punjab on transit remand.
The individuals are scheduled to appear in the Ajnala court on Friday, where the Punjab Police will request their remand for further investigation into the 2023 attack on the Ajnala police station.
Advocate Ritu Raj commented on the situation, stating, "The seven individuals whose NSA detention is concluding will be presented today. This group includes Bhagwant Singh (alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke), Daljit Singh Kalsi, and five others. Their custody will be determined in court; we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds."
In a related development, a senior official disclosed that the Punjab Police had secured the transit remand, effectively completing the legal transfer of the detainees from Dibrugarh Central Jail to Punjab.
The transfer was executed via two separate flights; three of the seven associates were flown together, while the remaining four took a different aircraft.
Previously, four detainees, Gurmeet Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Daljit Singh Kalsi, and Basant Singh, were released by the Dibrugarh jail authorities. However, upon their release, the Punjab Police re-arrested them concerning a case registered at the Ajnala Police Station. The re-arrested individuals were subsequently presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Dibrugarh.
Amritpal Singh, the leader of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, along with his nine aides, had been held in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam as the NSA was imposed on them two years prior.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh ran as an Independent and won the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab.
The detainees had been held in Dibrugarh Central Jail since March 2023, following a crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his associates in Punjab. Authorities invoked the NSA due to concerns about their involvement in activities that could disrupt public order and national security.
A senior Punjab Police official added that the investigation into the 2023 attack at the Ajnala police station is ongoing.
