Chandigarh, March 16 (NationPress) The Punjab Police is preparing to transfer seven principal associates of Amritpal Singh of 'Waris Punjab De' (WPD) from the Dibrugarh Jail in Assam back to Punjab, where they will be formally arrested in connection with an attack case, as stated by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.
The DGP revealed that the individuals being returned to Punjab include Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Gill, Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Harjeet Singh, and Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal.
Currently, these individuals have been held under the National Security Act (NSA) at the Dibrugarh facility for the past two years.
DGP Yadav mentioned that a robust police team led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill is stationed at Dibrugarh Jail to carry out the arrests upon the conclusion of their NSA detention period.
Following this, the Punjab Police will present them before a court in Dibrugarh to obtain a transit remand, facilitating their quick return to Punjab for trial, he added.
According to reports, on February 23, 2023, Amritpal Singh and his followers sought refuge under Sri Palki Sahib with the Guru Granth Sahib and launched an attack on the Ajnala police station to liberate their associate, identified as Lovepreet Singh, also known as Toofan.
In this matter, the Amritsar Rural Police had filed a case under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Ajnala police station. Providing further insights, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Border Range, Satinder Singh, alongside SSP Maninder Singh, indicated that starting Monday, seven of the ten detainees will be returned to Punjab to confront charges in multiple cases registered throughout the state.
"We will proceed with the formal arrest of these seven individuals at the Ajnala police station to initiate investigations into the case," he remarked.
