Guwahati, March 20 (NationPress) Seven associates of imprisoned Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh are set to be moved to Punjab from Assam’s Dibrugarh Central Jail on Thursday, with stringent security measures in place, officials reported.
A special police team will transport the seven detainees under the National Security Act (NSA) via flights, ensuring their safety during transit.
A senior official stated, “The Punjab Police have obtained their transit remand, finalizing the legal process for their transfer from Dibrugarh Central Jail.”
As explained by the official, the detainees will be split between two flights. Three of the aides will be on one flight, while the remaining four will take a different aircraft headed to Punjab.
In recent days, four detainees—Gurmeet Singh, Bhagwant Singh (also known as Pradhan Mantri Bajeke), Daljit Singh Kalsi, and Basant Singh—were released by the Dibrugarh jail authorities.
Immediately after their release, Punjab Police re-arrested them related to a case filed at the Ajnala Police Station in Punjab. The re-arrested individuals were subsequently presented to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) Court in Dibrugarh.
Based on court directives, they were placed under transit remand on March 17 and 18 for further legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the remaining detainees—Kulwant Singh, Harjeet Singh, and Kulwinder Pal Singh—were released on Wednesday as their NSA detention terms had expired.
Post-release, Punjab Police brought them before the judicial court in Dibrugarh and requested transit remand for further legal actions.
Amritpal Singh, the leader of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group, along with his nine aides, has been in Dibrugarh jail since March 2023 following a crackdown in Punjab. Authorities invoked the NSA due to fears regarding their roles in activities threatening public order and national security.
A high-ranking official from Punjab Police mentioned that the investigation into the 2023 attack at the Ajnala police station is ongoing.
The official further disclosed that ten individuals detained under the NSA have not yet been formally arrested concerning the Ajnala police station attack.
He noted, “We are progressing with the investigation and will apprehend the seven individuals involved in that incident, returning them to Punjab.”
“We will bring them here in connection with that case and continue the investigation,” the senior police official added.
