Kolkata, April 26 (NationPress) The remains of the late Havaldar Jhantu Ali Sheikh, the paratrooper martyr who lost his life in a terrorist ambush in the Basantgarh region of Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, earlier this week, were brought back to his native village in Tehatta, Nadia district, West Bengal, on Saturday.

As the body of the courageous paratrooper arrived at his home, the family members, who had been suppressing their emotions, finally broke down in tears.

The atmosphere was somber among the villagers who gathered to pay their final respects to this brave son of the soil.

The remains of Havaldar Sheikh were flown into Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Friday night from Jammu, and his body was transported to his native village by road on Saturday morning.

Residents had gathered outside the martyr's ancestral home since early Saturday to honor him and support his grieving family.

The martyr's elder brother, Nazim Sheikh, also serves as a non-commissioned officer in the Indian Army and is currently posted in Jammu and Kashmir.

Havaldar Sheikh is survived by his wife Jhuma and two children, Tanvir and Rehana.

His widow and children previously lived in a staff quarter at the Agra Cantonment in Uttar Pradesh but arrived in Tehatta on Friday to carry out his last rites.

"I can't believe my husband won't return. He was dedicated to his duty, with the nation always being his first priority. However, he rarely discussed his professional life with us," the martyr's widow shared with the media on Saturday.

Jhantu Ali Sheikh was a member of the 6th battalion of Para Special Forces.

Following the tragic killing of several tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam, an ambush occurred between Army personnel and militants in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district.

Havaldar Sheikh was part of the paratroopers' team involved in this ambush, during which he was fatally shot.

Three tourists from West Bengal were victims of the Pahalgam attack, including Manish Ranjan Mishra, an officer of the Intelligence Bureau, who hailed from Jhalda in Purulia district.
