Pahalgam Attack: A Widow's Pledge to Serve Her Country and Faith
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Pune, April 21 (NationPress) Commemorating one year since the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, Pragati Jagdale, the spouse of Santosh Jagdale, one of the 26 individuals mercilessly murdered, shared her lasting trauma and her commitment to devote her life to her country and faith.
Santosh Jagdale, aged 50, lost his life on April 22 last year in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district when terrorists opened fire on tourists in the renowned Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam. He was vacationing with his wife and daughter when the assault occurred. The traumatic event unfolded before their eyes, leaving profound emotional wounds that the family still battles today.
In an interview with IANS, Pragati Jagdale expressed that even with the passing of time, the memories of that fateful day are as fresh as ever.
"A year has gone by, yet it feels like we are still trapped in Baisaran Valley. I can still hear the screams and cries. What we experienced is something we relive daily. It's difficult to articulate fully, but the pain is unending," she shared.
Reflecting on the incident, she noted that the assailants had targeted their victims based on their religion prior to executing the horrific acts.
"When I recollect that moment, I often wonder if I could have intervened, taken the weapon, fought back, or somehow saved him. These thoughts plague me every day. I question whether I will ever move past this. Perhaps there’s a reason God has allowed me to survive," she mentioned.
Pragati Jagdale stated that this tragedy has significantly altered her perspective on life.
"My husband was murdered after being questioned about his religion. This harrowing incident has imparted many lessons to us. My daughter and I have resolved to dedicate our lives to our nation and our religion," she declared.
She also shared the fear and trauma she faced immediately following the attack.
"In the initial days, I was engulfed by fear. Even the sound of firecrackers would trigger memories of gunfire. I had nightmares of terrorists approaching me. However, as time passed, I came to understand that not everyone meets the same fate as my husband. He gave his life for our country and faith, which fills me with pride," she articulated.
Expressing her gratitude to the government, Pragati Jagdale acknowledged that while no action can truly make up for her loss, she appreciates the measures taken in response to the attack.
"Even if terrorism ceases to exist, I may never feel that justice has been served. Nonetheless, I am thankful to the government and to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their actions. I wish to meet him at least once," she added.
In the wake of the attack, India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, targeting terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation struck nine major launchpads associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen, resulting in the elimination of over 100 terrorists.
The strikes led to a four-day conflict characterized by drone warfare and artillery shelling from Pakistan. Indian forces retaliated with strikes on radar facilities in Lahore and near Gurjanwala.
After extensive damage, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) reached out to his Indian counterpart, leading to a ceasefire agreement on May 10.
