Mexico City, Dec 29 (NationPress) A passenger train transporting 241 travelers along with nine crew members derailed while on a bridge close to Nizanda in southern Mexico on Sunday, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries, according to a statement from the Secretariat of the Navy on social media.
The incident took place on the Interoceanic Train, which connects the Pacific port of Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast, as it navigated a curve near the town of Nizanda in Oaxaca. The train, comprising two locomotives and four passenger cars, partially veered off the tracks, with several carriages perilously tilting down a cliff.
Among the 98 injured, five individuals are reported to be in serious condition. Most of the injured have been admitted to hospitals operated by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, while others received treatment at IMSS-Wellbeing facilities in Juchitán and Ixtepec.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo shared on X, “The Secretariat of the Navy has informed me that in the Interoceanic Train accident, regrettably, 13 individuals have died; 98 are injured, five of whom are in critical condition. The injured are currently being treated in IMSS hospitals located in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, along with IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec.”
“I have instructed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary for Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the site and provide direct support to the victims’ families; the delegates from IMSS and IMSS-Wellbeing will also be present. The Secretary of the Interior will oversee the coordination of these efforts. I appreciate the assistance from the Governor of Oaxaca and his team. We will continue to provide updates,” she added.
Rescue teams were observed assisting passengers in evacuating from the derailed train as local and federal authorities organized relief and medical care. Governor Salomón Jara Cruz expressed his “deep sorrow” over the incident and assured that state authorities were fully cooperating with federal teams to support the affected families.
The Attorney General of Mexico has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the derailment. The Interoceanic rail link, launched two years ago under the administration of former President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, aimed to enhance regional connectivity, promote both passenger and freight transport, and establish a strategic trade corridor across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation, prioritizing passenger safety and providing urgent medical attention to those injured. This unfortunate incident highlights the necessity for stringent safety protocols on this crucial rail route through the challenging terrain of Oaxaca.
