Bhopal, March 3 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh Minister Prahlad Patel on Monday defended his contentious statement that "individuals have grown accustomed to relying on the government for assistance," clarifying that it was his own viewpoint and not affiliated with the BJP.

Patel, who oversees the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in the Madhya Pradesh government, stated that his comments were made during a community event organized by his own group. He asserted that his statements were taken out of context.

In conversation with IANS, Patel remarked, "This was not a BJP gathering, and Congress leaders were also in attendance when I encouraged my community members to maintain their dignity instead of relying on government aid. I have consistently advocated for this."

Patel also responded to state Congress president Jitu Patwari, accusing him of misinterpreting his statements for political advantage.

"The BJP has no connection to my comments, yet the Congress is attempting to tarnish the party's image. Jitu Patwari should apologize for his baseless accusations," Patel stated, alleging there is a conspiracy behind the uproar.

In response, Patwari criticized Patel's comments, claiming the BJP exhibited arrogance and a lack of empathy.

"This undermines the hardships faced by many," Patwari stated on Sunday. "Before elections, they make empty promises. When challenged, they shamelessly label people as beggars. They should remember—soon, these same BJP leaders will come seeking votes."

The dispute arose after a video of Patel’s speech at the unveiling ceremony of Veerangana Rani Avantibai Lodhi’s statue in Rajgarh district went viral.

In the footage, Patel is heard stating: "People have developed a habit of begging from the government. Leaders come, and they are presented with a basket full of petitions. They are welcomed on stage, and a letter is handed to them. This is not a favorable trend. Instead of soliciting, we should foster a culture of giving. This will contribute to a more satisfying life and a cultured society."

He further noted that this "army of beggars" is undermining societal strength. "Can you mention a martyr who has ever begged?" he posed. "Yet, we continue to hold events, deliver speeches, and move on."
