Transforming Lives: How the PM-JANMAN Scheme is Changing Housing for the Baiga Tribe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, April 7 (NationPress) The PM-JANMAN Awas Yojana, initiated by the Government of India in November 2023, has significantly transformed the lives of the Baiga, Sahariya, and Bharia tribal communities residing in the isolated regions of Shahdol district by offering them durable and concrete housing.
What was once just a vision of leaving behind mud huts has become a tangible reality for countless tribal families.
The PM-JANMAN initiative, aimed at supporting Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), has so far positively impacted thousands of tribal households in the area.
In addition to providing secure and comfortable housing, the scheme has greatly enhanced the living standards of these tribal families.
In Pakariya village, members of the Baiga tribe have witnessed a remarkable change in their lives since enrolling in the scheme.
Previously compelled to inhabit fragile mud homes, they endured severe challenges each monsoon season; now, they have relief from these ongoing issues.
Gaukaran Baiga, a beneficiary, shared with IANS that he received ₹200,000 under the scheme, which he used to build a permanent, concrete residence.
He expressed his heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this life-changing initiative.
Another beneficiary, Vishwanath Baiga, recounted the difficulties associated with living in a mud house and expressed his gratitude to the government for its welfare programs.
Vishwanath's daughter, Lakshmi Baiga, noted that while they were in a makeshift home, rainwater would leak through the roof during monsoon, damaging her books and affecting her studies.
Now, she feels a sense of happiness and relief after moving into a concrete house. She, too, extended her thanks to PM Modi.
Additionally, Chandrika Baiga mentioned he learned about the scheme through the Gram Panchayat Secretary. After completing the necessary paperwork, he received ₹200,000, which he used to construct his permanent home.
Tejbali Baiga also shared the severe hardships he faced in a kuccha house, especially during the rainy season.
Deepak Patel, the Block Coordinator for PM-JANMAN and Awaas Gramin in Budhar Janpad Panchayat of Shahdol district, emphasized that the primary goal of the PM-JANMAN Awas Yojana is to realize the dream of providing tribal families with a concrete home.
He added that 2,086 beneficiaries in the Budhar Janpad area have been registered, with 1,752 beneficiaries now residing in their permanent homes, while the rest are in the process of construction.
Notably, the scheme prioritizes tribal communities like the Baiga, Sahariya, and Bharia tribes. The Budhar region of Shahdol district has the highest concentration of the Baiga tribe.
The PM-JANMAN scheme emphasizes 11 critical interventions through 9 Ministries, aiming to improve the socio-economic conditions of PVTGs by equipping households with essential facilities such as secure housing, clean drinking water, sanitation, enhanced access to education, health, nutrition, electricity, transportation, and sustainable job opportunities.
