Guwahati, Feb 20 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his profound grief over the untimely passing of Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, the Lok Sabha Member of Parliament representing Shillong. He recognized Dr. Syngkon as a devoted public servant who consistently championed the welfare of the people in Meghalaya.
In a heartfelt post on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed his sorrow over Dr. Syngkon’s death and offered his sincerest condolences to the grieving family, friends, and supporters.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon. His unwavering dedication to the people of Meghalaya will not be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and supporters during this challenging time. May his soul find peace,” PM Modi wrote.
Dr. Ricky A.J. Syngkon, a member of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), tragically passed away on Thursday evening after suddenly falling ill while participating in a football game, causing shock and mourning throughout the political landscape of Meghalaya.
On that fateful Thursday, Dr. Syngkon was enjoying a football match with friends at a local playground in Mawlai Mawiong. During the game, he unexpectedly collapsed, raising immediate alarm among those around him. His friends quickly transported him to the nearby Mawiong Community Health Centre (CHC) for urgent medical assistance. Unfortunately, due to the absence of a doctor at that time, he was referred to a more advanced medical facility. Consequently, he was moved to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw for more comprehensive treatment.
Despite the medical team's best efforts, Dr. Syngkon succumbed shortly after arrival, being declared dead around 8:42 p.m. This unexpected loss left supporters, colleagues, and residents of the state in disbelief.
In the wake of his passing, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, along with numerous legislators, senior political figures, and party members, hurried to the hospital to pay their respects and comfort the bereaved family.
Dr. Syngkon, a first-time MP, had gained significant prominence after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a remarkable margin, defeating three-time Congress MP Vincent H. Pala by over 370,000 votes, a result that marked a notable change in Meghalaya's political dynamics.
Recognized for his connection with the grassroots and his advocacy on matters concerning indigenous rights, governance, and transparency, Dr. Syngkon’s sudden passing has left a significant gap in both state and national politics, especially within the VPP.
Political leaders from various backgrounds expressed their sympathies, remembering him as a devoted public figure with a bright political future.
The state government is expected to provide further information regarding the final rites and official condolence arrangements.
