Islamabad, Feb 8 (NationPress) On February 8, local media sources reported that two police officers were injured in distinct attacks aimed at law enforcement in the Bannu district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Armed assailants opened fire at the Khonia Khel police check post in the Wazir sub-division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday. According to reports from the Pakistani daily Dawn, one police officer, identified as Noor Muhammad, sustained injuries during the gunfire exchange. Following this incident, a search operation was initiated in the vicinity.

In a separate event, a police team from Mirakhel was ambushed on Dera Ismail Road in Bannu while transporting the body of a murder victim to a medical facility. Reports indicate that another officer, Azmat, was injured as armed attackers opened fire on them. The police's preliminary investigation revealed that six assailants participated in this attack, fleeing the scene thereafter.

Earlier, on February 3, a police recruit constable lost his life after being attacked by unidentified assailants in the Lakki Marwat district. Local police disclosed that the constable was killed in the Darga forest near the Sarai Naurang area.

District Police Spokesperson Qudratullah confirmed that the constable was receiving treatment at the Hangu Training School when he was abducted from his residence and subsequently killed in the forest.

Since the termination of the ceasefire agreement between the government and the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) in 2022, Pakistan has seen a surge in terrorist activities, particularly within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

A report from January indicated that the security landscape in Pakistan deteriorated sharply in 2025, marking the fifth consecutive year of escalating conflict and violence.

In total, 699 attacks were documented in Pakistan during 2025, reflecting a 34% increase from 2024, as noted in the Pakistan Security Report 2025 by PIPS. This led to the deaths of 1,034 individuals and injuries to 1,366 others, signifying a 21% rise in fatalities.

Violence related to conflict, which includes attacks, counter-terrorism operations, border skirmishes, and kidnappings, surged to 1,124 incidents, illustrating a 43% increase from the previous year. These occurrences emphasize a crisis that is becoming increasingly challenging to manage, as reported by Dawn.

Law enforcement personnel form a significant portion of the casualties in these attacks, with police stations, patrols, and checkpoints frequently targeted. The report underscores that most incidents transpired in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Attacks against law enforcement agencies have become commonplace in the southern regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Insurgents in Balochistan have expanded their tactics beyond simple hit-and-run assaults to incorporate highway blockades, kidnappings, and damage to infrastructure. Much of this violence is fueled by ideologically motivated groups, particularly the TTP, according to the security report.
