Bhubaneswar, May 14 (NationPress) The Commissionerate Police successfully rescued a four-year-old child who had been abducted from Bhoi Nagar in the Saheed Nagar region of Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, just hours after the incident, as reported by Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh on Wednesday.
The suspect, Sonu Nayak, also known as Abhisek Digal (25), hails from Lamonjia under the Raikia police jurisdiction in Kandhamal district and has been taken into custody by the authorities.
During a press briefing, Singh elaborated that upon receiving notification of the crime, the Commissionerate Police promptly mobilized their resources—both human and digital—to resolve the case efficiently.
Describing the kidnapping as a highly sensitive issue, Singh noted that this marks the third instance of child abduction in the twin city over the past two months, with all victims being recovered in a timely manner.
According to police sources, the child's mother, Garita Singh, had been living in Bangalore with her minor sons due to a marital conflict with her husband. She had met the accused during her time in Bangalore. After reconciling with her husband, she returned to Bhubaneswar two months ago and resumed living with him.
The police stated that on May 12, the accused visited Garita's home, and the following day, between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., he abducted her younger son while he was playing outside with his elder brother, Rehan Mallik, who is eight years old.
After the abduction, the victim's mother attempted to reach the suspect but found his phone turned off.
“Subsequently, the accused met his younger brother, Abhaya Digal, at IDBI Chowk and deceitfully claimed that the kidnapped child was his own son. Unaware of the actual situation and believing the child to be his nephew (as the accused had been estranged from the family for 15 years), Abhaya took them to his rented home in Tarini Nagar, located in the Saliasahi area. The minor was later recovered, and the suspect was arrested,” explained the Commissionerate police.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the motivations behind the child's abduction.
