Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday, police conducted a successful operation, resulting in the seizure of a significant amount of cannabis across two districts in West Bengal, alongside the recovery of firearms from a separate district.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully confiscated about 13 kilograms of cannabis from Platform No. 2 at Kharagpur Station in the West Midnapore district. A Bihar resident, identified as Ashish Kumar, aged 19, was arrested on drug trafficking charges.
According to railway officials, Ashish was found transporting 12.95 kilograms of cannabis cleverly concealed within bags and suitcases.
Mitun Kumar Dey, Superintendent of Railway Police at Kharagpur GRP, reported that the suspect was waiting for a train on Platform No. 2 around 1:30 p.m. During questioning, it was disclosed that he had boarded the train in Odisha and intended to smuggle the cannabis to Tatanagar in Jharkhand.
Authorities confirmed that Ashish was subsequently presented before a court.
Simultaneously, in the Sagardighi area of Murshidabad district, police apprehended two traffickers attempting to smuggle cannabis via a postal service vehicle.
During a routine checkpoint inspection late Monday night on National Highway 12, officers from the Sagardighi Police Station arrested the duo near Moregram.
The suspects were identified as Gobinda Sarkar and Adhir Mandal. Gobinda resides in Chakulia in North Dinajpur, while Adhir is from Hili in South Dinajpur. The police recovered approximately 67 kilograms of cannabis from their possession.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed a plan to acquire the narcotics from Northeast India and transport them to Kolkata. To evade detection at checkpoints, they had hidden the cannabis inside a vehicle adorned with official postal department insignia.
Moreover, to elude police scrutiny, they placed counterfeit government seals and tags on the sacks, making it impossible to identify the contents from the outside as illicit drugs rather than legitimate mail.
In a separate incident late Monday night, police from the Sahebganj Police Station in Cooch Behar district arrested an individual found with a firearm.
According to reports, the suspect, identified as Ajay Debnath, was apprehended in the Kharija Baniyadah area. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the source of the firearm and the suspect's intentions.
