Key Takeaways
Seoul, Dec 22 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung committed on Monday to enhancing welfare initiatives for senior citizens, showing appreciation for the older generation's role in the nation’s economic progress and democratization.
During a luncheon with members of the Korean Senior Citizens' Association, Lee remarked that South Korea has officially transitioned into a super-aged society this year, with individuals aged 65 and above making up over 20 percent of the population.
"Policies aimed at older adults are not solely for seniors; they benefit everyone," he stated, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. "The government is implementing various measures to ensure that seniors can enjoy healthy and dignified golden years."
He emphasized the introduction of a nationwide, tailored care system that combines medical, nursing, and caregiving services, set to be implemented in March. This plan includes an increase in basic pension benefits and the expansion of employment programs for seniors.
In a bid to further enhance senior welfare, Lee mentioned that the government intends to gradually extend National Health Insurance coverage to encompass caregiving expenses at nursing facilities.
"We will reinforce the safety net for welfare while shifting focus to empower seniors, allowing their experiences and wisdom to serve as valuable societal assets," he added.
During the gathering, Lee expressed gratitude to the older generation for their dedication and sacrifices, which helped transform the country from a war-torn state after the 1950-53 Korean War into a thriving economic power and vibrant democracy, enhancing its soft power.
This year is significant in South Korea’s history, as the nation has successfully navigated a democratic crisis following former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful martial law attempt last December, returning to a stable course.
"We understand that the nation’s achievements in economy, politics, and culture are founded on the sacrifices and dedication of our seniors," Lee remarked. "You have journeyed with us through industrialization and democratization, and we are profoundly grateful for your labor."
