Imphal, Dec 12 (NationPress) During her two-day visit to Manipur, President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal on the significant occasion of the 86th Nupi Lal Day, which honors two movements led by women against British colonial policies.
The President also visited the Shree Govindaji Temple at the Palace Compound, situated approximately two kilometers from the Nupi Lal Memorial.
According to an official, President Murmu expressed her heartfelt respect for the courageous women warriors of Manipur whose bravery continues to motivate future generations. Accompanying the President, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also laid floral tributes at the memorial.
In his message, the Governor remarked that this day, often referred to as 'Nupilan Numit', serves as a tribute to the remarkable courage, resilience, and patriotic sacrifices of the women of Manipur.
He noted that the Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939 are celebrated chapters in history where the women of Manipur united against injustice and exploitation with unparalleled spirit. “Nupi Lal was more than just a protest; it was a powerful demonstration of women’s collective leadership and social awareness. The brave mothers of Manipur transformed their suffering into courage, resulting in a movement that continues to inspire generations. Their sacrifices remind us that a society's progress depends on respecting and empowering its women,” stated Bhalla.
The Governor encouraged the people of Manipur to honor the proud legacy of Nupi Lal and work towards a peaceful and harmonious society. “May the spirit of our brave mothers guide us towards a future of prosperity, unity, and progress,” he added.
Following her tribute, the President departed for the Naga tribal-inhabited Senapati District in Manipur, where she will address a public function, lay foundation stones, and inaugurate various projects for the district. This marks her first visit to the conflict-affected Northeastern state since taking office as President.
On Thursday, the President attended a civic reception organized by the Manipur government at the City Convention Centre. During the event, she acknowledged the “unfortunate violence” faced by the people of Manipur and emphasized that the Centre is fully aware of their hardships.
She reassured that the Government of India stands firmly with every affected family in Manipur, prioritizing the resolution of their concerns.
President Murmu expressed the government's commitment to fostering harmony, ensuring security, and aiding Manipur's development journey. “The government has initiated several measures to promote equitable development in Manipur, ensuring progress reaches every corner of the state,” she stated.
Prior to the civic reception, the President attended a polo exhibition match at the historic Imphal Polo Ground (known as Mapal Kangjeibung), one of the oldest polo grounds globally.
On Thursday, President Murmu also met with a number of Internally Displaced Persons in Imphal.
