Congress Leaders Kharge and Gandhi to Mobilize Farmers in Bhopal Against India-US Trade Deal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will journey to Bhopal to spearhead a significant protest against the interim India-US trade agreement. The Congress party contends that this deal jeopardizes the welfare of Indian farmers by allowing an influx of cheaper imports from the US.
Jitu Patwari, the President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, proclaimed the event, asserting: "On February 24, 2026, in Bhopal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will actively advocate for farmers' rights against the injustices inflicted by the India-US trade agreement."
During a press briefing, Patwari criticized the government for succumbing to US pressure, claiming that the agreement has already led to a decline in prices for vital crops, including soybean, cotton, and maize.
He labeled the deal a "compromise" enforced "with a sword over their necks," emphasizing that farmers in Madhya Pradesh, particularly those growing soybean, maize, and cotton, along with their families, are directly impacted.
The event on February 24 signifies the party's dedication to advocating for farmers across the nation. The protest will take the form of a Kisan Sammelan (farmers' convention) in Bhopal, initiating a focused campaign in vulnerable states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Bihar.
Details about the upcoming Kisan Mahapanchayat at Atal Path in the Jawahr Chowk area were shared by former minister and Madhya Pradesh Congress media in-charge Mukesh Nayak, indicating that over 100,000 farmers from across the state are anticipated to attend.
Nayak noted that the program is set to commence around 2 PM with the arrival of Kharge and Gandhi in Bhopal. He also mentioned that large domes have been erected at the venue, featuring a grand stage where nearly 250 leaders and office-bearers are expected to assemble.
According to Nayak, "The Kisan Mahapanchayat in Bhopal will be pivotal for Congress workers in the state and will catalyze a movement for change in Madhya Pradesh. The populace is frustrated with over 20 years of corruption and chaos under the BJP's rule."
Congress MLA Umang Singhar, who serves as Leader of Opposition in the state, remarked that soybean producers might see decreased prices due to import pressures, while cotton farmers in the Malwa and Nimar regions could experience losses.
Singhar stated, "The Kisan Mahapanchayat aims to support farmers and raise awareness regarding what Congress has termed the 'anti-farmer ramifications' of the trade agreement."
