Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, on Thursday, 6 August raised the issue of Operation Hard Ball during Zero Hour, demanding that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state government table a comprehensive report in the Vidhan Sabha on allegations stemming from an FBI-led international investigation into transnational organised crime networks. The demand came amid disclosures by the US Department of Justice alleging collusion between a Punjab Police officer and a notorious criminal gang.

What the US Department of Justice Alleged

According to the US Department of Justice, Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra allegedly colluded with members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang to extort nearly $400,000 (approximately ₹3.8 crore) from an Indian-origin family based in California. The alleged scheme involved threatening to falsely implicate innocent family members — including women — in a murder case, using official police machinery as leverage.

'The allegations suggest that official police machinery was allegedly misused to facilitate organised crime. This is not merely a case of individual misconduct but raises serious questions about the functioning of the law enforcement system in Punjab,' Bajwa told the House.

Operation Hard Ball: Scope of the Investigation

Citing the findings of Operation Hard Ball, Bajwa said the FBI-led probe has exposed how transnational criminal networks allegedly linked to Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and Rohit Godara — along with their overseas associates — continued to direct extortion, murder conspiracies, and other organised criminal activities through local operatives, financial channels, and corrupt facilitators. The investigation underscores how criminal networks with roots in Punjab have extended their reach across international borders.

Congress Questions Political Patronage

Bajwa pressed the AAP government on whether such an alleged nexus between police officials and gangsters could function without political protection. 'Can such a network operate without the knowledge or protection of those in power? The AAP government owes an explanation to the people of Punjab. It must clarify whether organised crime has managed to infiltrate the policing system under its watch,' he said.

The Congress leader demanded that the tabled report detail the facts of the case, action taken against those allegedly involved, the status of departmental and criminal proceedings, and concrete steps to dismantle any alleged police-gangster nexus.

Punjab Police Response So Far

Following the FBI disclosures, the Punjab Police transferred Inspector Nagra, initiated a departmental inquiry, and subsequently arrested him in an extortion case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Bajwa acknowledged that the US investigation does not allege institutional wrongdoing by the Punjab Police as a whole, but argued the revelations underscore the urgent need for greater accountability, stronger internal vigilance, and complete transparency to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
