Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 6 (NationPress) In a significant move to ease financial burdens for residents, businesses, and industries throughout Punjab, the government announced a reduction in electricity tariffs on Friday for all consumer segments. This adjustment results in a decrease of up to Rs 1.5 per unit for residential users, 79 paise per unit for commercial entities, and 74 paise per unit for industrial clients.
The new pricing structure, approved by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission under the leadership of Viswajeet Khanna, will be effective from April 1 until March 31, 2027.
Power Minister Sanjeev Arora stated that the tariff cuts across various categories would significantly benefit households, bolster MSMEs, and enhance industrial competitiveness within the state.
Furthermore, the government has slashed the tariff for electric vehicle (EV) charging to Rs 5 per unit, one of the lowest rates nationally. The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has also marked a financial turnaround, achieving an A+ credit rating and reporting a profit of Rs 2,634 crore, showcasing the increasing efficiency and resilience of Punjab's power sector under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The revised tariff scheme brings down electricity costs while safeguarding the financial stability of the power sector.
Residential users will witness a reduction of up to Rs 1.5 per unit based on their consumption levels, while commercial users will enjoy savings of up to 79 paise per unit, and industrial users will see reductions of up to 74 paise per unit.
Minister Arora remarked, "With the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab government has prioritized consumer-friendly electricity tariffs that also promote industrial development and economic progress in the state."
He further emphasized the advantages for domestic consumers, noting that households will continue to receive significant assistance through the government's flagship initiative offering free electricity.
"Households will benefit from a total of 300 units of electricity per month, equivalent to 600 units per billing cycle, which remains entirely free. Over 90 percent of households in Punjab are already reaping the benefits of this free electricity scheme initiated by the government," Minister Arora concluded.
