Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 29 (NationPress) In a pivotal move to enhance urban road infrastructure, the Punjab government has initiated the 'Next Generation Road Renovation Programme'.
This initiative aims at the swift modernization of major roads and crucial junctions in the state’s largest urban hub, significantly improving connectivity and facilitating smoother travel for commuters.
The project will be implemented following the NHAI model under a hybrid annuity framework, ensuring long-lasting roads accompanied by a 10-year maintenance plan.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian elaborated on the program on Thursday, stating that the government is committed to fortifying road infrastructure throughout the state to provide enhanced connectivity and efficient transportation services for the populace.
While priority upgrades are underway for major state highways and rural roads, the government has now launched extensive road renovation efforts in Mohali, the state’s principal urban center.
The minister noted that substantial development initiatives are in motion to elevate SAS Nagar (Mohali) into a world-class city. In line with the city’s master plan, the dedicated 'Next Generation Road Renovation Programme' has been crafted to further bolster and modernize the city’s essential infrastructure.
Under this initiative, significant roads and junctions managed by the GMADA and the Municipal Corporation will undergo immediate upgrades and improvements. The project encompasses the enhancement and reinforcement of key arterial roads to ensure fluid traffic flow and effectively tackle congestion issues.
Additionally, damaged roads will be repaired and resurfaced to offer residents and visitors safe and comfortable commuting options.
Mundian emphasized that special attention will be given to the beautification of roads and vital junctions. This beautification will involve landscaping, modern lighting installations, and increased green cover, all aimed at elevating the overall urban aesthetics and environmental quality of the city. He highlighted that all development works under this initiative will be executed following the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) standards through the hybrid annuity model. Under this model, the contractor awarded the project will not only oversee the execution but also maintain the roads for a decade.
