New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) On the occasion of Vijay Diwas this Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, paid homage to those who exhibited remarkable bravery and made history during the 1971 war.

Every year, December 16 is commemorated in India to celebrate the significant victory over Pakistan in the 1971 conflict, which led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the establishment of Bangladesh.

This date also marks the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops to the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka, representing the largest military surrender since World War II. It pays tribute to the gallantry and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought valiantly for the nation's honor and independence.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi remarked, "On this Vijay Diwas, I honor the courageous heroes of our armed forces who, while safeguarding India's borders during the 1971 war, made history with their valor, commitment, and steadfast determination. Their extraordinary courage, struggle, and ultimate sacrifice will forever inspire every Indian."

The National President of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, stated that the victory of 1971, under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, serves as a "great example of humanity and justice".

"On this very day in 1971, history was written when the brave armed forces of India decisively triumphed over Pakistan, securing freedom for Bangladesh and altering the global map," he shared on X.

"Under the visionary, courageous, and steadfast leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi, this victory became a remarkable example of humanity and justice. We pay our deepest respects to the unparalleled courage, valor, and sacrifices of the Indian military and the Mukti Bahini. The dedication and sacrifice of these heroic individuals will be eternally cherished by a grateful nation," he added.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her tribute on X, honoring the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1971 war and secured India's victory over Pakistan.

"On this day, our brave army set a benchmark of valor and heroism, bringing pride to the nation. In 1971, our military delivered a decisive response to the war thrust upon us, compelling the surrender of the Pakistani army," she stated.

Praising the leadership of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, Priyanka noted, "This historic victory not only reinforced India's integrity but also asserted Indian strength on the global stage. Today is a day to remember the bravery and military prowess of our forces, along with the exceptional leadership of Smt. Indira Gandhi. We salute the martyrs who laid down their lives for India's victory and all the courageous soldiers."
