Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 6 (NationPress) During an engaging session of Question Hour and Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tackled essential issues surrounding infrastructure growth. This included prospects for Metro services in Jammu, stalled projects due to land and environmental challenges, demands for premium train services, and current railway programs in Kerala.
In the Question Hour, BJP MP Gulam Ali inquired about plans for a Metro system in Jammu.
In his response, Minister Vaishnaw mentioned that he would refer this question to Manohar Lal Khattar, responsible for Metro matters, while acknowledging the distinct challenges of operating rail systems in the high-altitude regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Operating railways in high-altitude areas presents complexities; we need specialized designs for trains in Jammu and Kashmir. The designs are finalized, and decisions are imminent," he expressed, suggesting progress towards custom solutions that could enhance urban mobility, possibly introducing Metro-like services.
He also clarified that the Railways would not extend spurs of the main railway line due to negative impacts on apple orchards, voicing farmers' concerns.
During Zero Hour, the Minister pointed out barriers obstructing railway expansion, particularly regarding the Silver Line semi-high-speed rail project in Kerala, which faces significant environmental scrutiny.
"The Silver Line project carries a substantial environmental footprint," Vaishnaw remarked.
"The state government needs to collaborate with the Central government, as land acquisition poses significant difficulties, resulting in numerous pending railway projects," he urged.
He called for increased cooperation from state authorities to alleviate delays affecting multiple national projects.
BJP MP from Maharashtra, Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni, advocated for the launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on the Delhi-Pune route.
"The Vande Bharat Sleeper train should connect Pune and Delhi, as many individuals from Delhi commute to Pune for work," she stated, emphasizing that Pune deserves premium facilities to cater to its growing workforce and connectivity demands.
In a notable comment concerning the stalled Angamaly-Sabarimala rail project in Kerala, which has been delayed due to land acquisition issues, Railway Minister Vaishnaw asserted, "When the BJP secures power in Kerala, we will ensure the Angamaly-Sabarimala land acquisition progresses."
This remark gained attention amidst ongoing discussions on political backing for infrastructure in states governed by opposition parties.
