New Delhi, Aug 30 (NationPress) In light of the tariff threats issued by US President Donald Trump, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that in the realm of international relations, there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.
He affirmed that India will steadfastly safeguard the interests of its farmers and citizens, maintaining an unchanged stance despite any external pressure.
"This vision will ensure our security in the future and will elevate our status among the emerging global powers. It reflects in our every decision. As the world rapidly evolves, developed nations are exhibiting a form of protectionism, and the seriousness of the trade and tariff conflict is escalating," Defence Minister Singh stated during his address at the NDTV Defence Summit 2025.
His comments were a response to Trump's declaration of a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, citing what he termed as unfair trade practices and New Delhi's unwillingness to cease imports of Russian crude oil.
Quoting Edmund Burke, who characterized the East India Company as "a state in the guise of a merchant," Defence Minister Singh remarked, "Today, the state is operating like merchants; his quote has evolved to signify a merchant in the guise of the state."
"I want to highlight the Prime Minister's pledge that we shall never compromise our principles and morals," he added.
Clarifying India's position, Defence Minister Singh expressed, "As a nation progresses, it aligns with the interests of some nations considered allies, while with others it may have conflicts, rendering them as adversaries. In international relations, there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests."
He reiterated that India will not waver on the welfare of its populace.
"India does not classify anyone as its enemy. Nevertheless, our foremost priorities are the interests of our farmers, small businesses, and citizens, which we will not compromise on, regardless of pressures. India will consistently prioritize the rights of our farmers, entrepreneurs, poultry farmers, shopkeepers, and citizens," he stated.
Furthermore, he declared that external pressures would only bolster India's determination.
"India will grow stronger in response to increasing pressures. Our policies and planning, along with Atmanirbharta, will remain steadfast despite any external challenges," Defence Minister Singh asserted.
