Created to acknowledge and encourage groundbreaking research and accomplishments, the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is awarded in four distinct categories: Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shri, Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, and Vigyan Team.
The Vigyan Ratna Award, honoring lifetime achievement, was awarded posthumously to Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar for his remarkable contributions to Physics.
